We have all been there: standing in a long line under the hot sun, only to be told you need two valid IDs just to get your very first ID. It is a classic, frustrating hurdle that almost every Filipino has faced at least once. But this exact everyday struggle takes a meaningful yet deeply relatable turn in the movie 2 Valid IDs, an official entry to the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival this August 2026. Headlining this story is Marietta Subong, more popular to audiences as Pokwang, who is taking a well-deserved breather from delivering loud laughter to give us a heartwarming, dramatic performance that reflects the real-life plight of many ordinary Filipinos.

Pokwang shines bright in a new light

While the country loves her as a comedy superstar, 2 Valid IDs highlights Pokwang's incredible range as a dramatic actress. This isn't her first time moving us to tears; audiences will easily recall her brilliant performance in the 2018 film Oda sa Wala, which won Best Picture and earned her the Best Actress award at the QCinema International Film Festival. For this year’s Cinemalaya Festival, she sheds her funny persona completely to show the inspiring strength of a mother fighting for her family. Joining her on screen is a fantastic, star-studded cast: seasoned actor Joey Marquez plays her sick husband Ramon, alongside the talented young actor Zaijian Jaranilla as Denver, and the acclaimed actress Meryll Soriano as Mercy.

A story of love and hope against the odds

The movie grounds the headache of paperwork into a touching story about survival and family devotion. We follow Sylvia (Pokwang), a simple farmer who desperately needs to claim emergency money sent by a relative at a remittance center. The cash is urgently needed for the medical treatment of her husband, Ramon, who is battling a severe lung illness. However, the counter requires her to submit a valid ID, but she doesn't have one. And when she applied to get one, she was told she needs to present 2 valid IDs. Pushed to look for a "fixer" just to get through, Sylvia’s journey is ultimately a beautiful testament to how far a person will go out of pure love, showing that hope can still shine through even the most confusing systems.

The passionate team behind the camera

Bringing this relevant story to life is director Ma-an L. Asuncion-Dagñalan, an acclaimed filmmaker who won Best Director at the 2022 Cinemalaya Festival and the 2023 FAMAS Awards for her hit movie Blue Room. She trained under National Artist Ricky Lee and acclaimed screenwriter Armando Lao. The heartfelt script is written by Abet Pagdagdagan Raz, who beautifully captures the real everyday rhythm of Filipino life. Rounding out the creative team is producer Geo Lomuntad of Super! Entertainment, known for championing hit Filipino films like the Philippines’ entry to the 2024 Oscars, Iti Mapukpukaw (The Missing), and Antoinette Jadaone’s Sunshine, which won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival

Why this film demands our attention

2 Valid IDs goes beyond standard festival entertainment; it is an urgent piece of advocacy. The film hopes to be a vital eye-opener, challenging the audience to look closely at the systemic oppression hidden behind mundane paperwork. The discussion aims to contribute to ongoing societal reforms. Produced by Super!, Eyepoppers Multimedia Services, Inc., Cloudy Duck Pictures, Aliud Entertainment, CMB Film Services, and Be True Entertainment, this is one cultural milestone you cannot miss.
