Cebuano cinema returns to the screens of the Sine Kabataan 9 Film Lab & Festival this year with Bato’ng Bunga, a poignant tale that echoes the Sisyphean allegory of endless struggle. Directed by Elj Seth Tababa, the film follows a former miner and his family as they endure the devastating consequences of a curse born from the mines.
Sol Eugenio stars as Gregor, a former miner whose body has gradually turned to stone. His tender and deeply intimate performance breathes humanity into a character weighed down by both physical immobility and emotional burden. Beside him is Sharon Ceneta as Lina, Gregor's devoted wife. In her first Bisaya-language role, Ceneta delivers a restrained yet deeply expressive performance, capturing the quiet resilience of a woman caring for a loved one in seemingly impossible circumstances.
At the heart of the story is Samantha, portrayed by Theresa Leoligao. Torn between her responsibility to her family and her desire to pursue a future in the city, Samantha becomes the emotional center of the film. Her dilemma reflects the difficult choices faced by many young people caught between obligation and aspiration, making Bato’ng Bunga not only a story about a family's curse, but also a meditation on sacrifice, resilience, and the weight of inherited struggles.
Leading Bato’ng Bunga is director Elj Seth Tababa, who returns to the Sinekabataan Film Lab & Festival in a new capacity after previously appearing as a lead actor in an entry for its 8th edition. He previously appeared as the lead in the Sine Kabataan 8 entry, ‘Sunog Sa Sugbo’. Now behind the camera, Tababa collaborates closely with his former director, who helms the project as its producer, Jon Owen Lepiten, in bringing this deeply rooted Cebuano story to the festival stage.
The film's striking visual world is shaped by Director of Photography Ethan David Gipanao, whose cinematography captures both the stark beauty of the mining landscape and the emotional weight carried by its characters. Complementing his work are Production Designer Yaneh Dacullo and Prosthetics Artist Veannshe Calog, whose meticulous craftsmanship brings the film's haunting central curse to life, grounding its allegorical elements in a tangible and unsettling reality.
Bato’ng Bunga will make its world premiere at the Sine Kabataan 9 Film Lab & Festival on September 18-20 at Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong. Through its quiet, observational storytelling and deeply human performances, the film invites audiences into an intimate portrait of a family burdened by loss, duty, and the enduring weight of survival. The film offers a poignant reflection on the sacrifices demanded by both love and circumstance.
