Queer UP student filmmakers bring a story of quiet resistance to Puregold CinePanalo

Somewhere between heaven and earth, there is a space where faith meets desire, innocence meets awakening, and what we are taught meets what we quietly discover for ourselves.
Set against the Catholic traditions of Pulilan, Bulacan, When Heaven Inched Towards Earth looks at the fragile space between faith and desire, innocence and awakening, and the things we are taught to believe against the things we quietly discover for ourselves. At its heart is a young farm boy, David (André Miguel), navigating the complicated terrain of growing up in a community where faith and tradition are woven into everyday life.
But adolescence introduces questions that cannot always be answered by what has been handed down. When David forms a closer bond with Angelo (Kaleb Ong), his classmate and a sacristan, an intimacy begins to grow that is tender, unfamiliar, and difficult to name. As his understanding of himself slowly changes, so too does his relationship with the world around him. Their house, the school, the church, and the traditions of their community begin to become sites of interrogation of his faith, desire, fear, and wonder.
For its filmmakers, mostly students from the University of the Philippines Film Institute, these details came from a shared understanding of experiences that shape Filipino queer lives. This personal connection became central to the filmmaking process, bringing together a collective of queer filmmakers whose lived experiences informed how the story was developed and told. They approached the film with a deeper sense of authenticity, sensitivity, and care, allowing its portrayal of queer life to be grounded not only in representation, but in recognition and lived truth.
Leading this creative vision is the writer-director Vinh Marco. His personal experiences growing up in Pulilan, Bulacan, where the film is set, allows the place to exist not only as a backdrop but as a living part of the story. Marco also previously made Gawad Alternatibo finalist Walang Bakla sa Langit, an experimental film inspired by Klara Espedido’s poem of the same name, which also reflects on the intersection of queerness and faith.
The film is produced by Miko Biong and Eia Arcenal, bringing together filmmakers with a history in queer and regional cinema. Biong is the director of award-winning queer film Bahay, Baboy, Bagyo and producer of Gawad Urian nominee Coding Si Papa, while Arcenal is the producer of award-winning queer film Nicotine Blues, and part of Bisperas Kolektib, the collective behind Sinag Maynila 2026 film Crossings.
Behind the camera, Kinno Toogue shaped the film’s visual language, reflecting the intimacy and restraint of growing up in a deeply religious community. Production designer Kiel Vibares created a world rooted in the familiar textures of provincial Filipino life. Another Gawad Urian nominee, Gab Rosique, gave the story its emotional pace, allowing moments of hesitation, longing, and quiet defiance to unfold naturally. Leon Pavia completed the film’s atmosphere through sound design and original music, contrasting the quietness of rural life with the weight of tradition and expectations that shape the community.
Together, the team approached When Heaven Inched Towards Earth as more than a story of contradictions. Rather than relying on familiar narratives of coming out, the film explores the more complicated ways identity is shaped by family, community, faith and tradition. It is simply not just about choosing between who one is and what he believes in, but rather, it is about learning to live within these tensions. In doing so, the film offers a more intimate and nuanced portrayal of Filipino queer life.
When Heaven Inched Towards Earth will premiere as part of the third edition of the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, competing under Shorts B of the Student Category. The festival runs from September 23 to October 4, 2026, with screenings at Gateway Cineplex 18 and select Ayala Malls Cinemas.
