Twenty-five years after its Broadway debut—and eleven years since it was brought to the Ateneo stage—Urinetown: The Musical is making its long-awaited return this November 2026.
Brought to you by Ateneo Blue Repertory, the company behind the award-winning Zsazsa Zaturnnah The Musical... 'Yun Lang! (2023), The Addams Family (2026), Legally Blonde (2025), the PROM (2024), Next to Normal (2020), Spring Awakening (2019), and RENT (2018). This Tony Award-winning satirical musical comedy, with book and lyrics by Greg Kotis and music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann, promises an evening of sharp laughs, big belting numbers, and a rebellion you'll be dying to join.
In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!
With themes of corporate greed, class struggle, and the price of hope, Urinetown skewers capitalism, government corruption, populist politics, and the musical theater form itself. In a world where basic necessities can become political bargaining chips, the musical asks a question that feels uncomfortably familiar: what happens when those in power decide who gets access, who pays the price, and who gets to make the rules? Beneath its absurdity and sharp humor lies a story about ordinary people navigating systems that promise order while leaving them to foot the bill.
The production welcomes its distinguished artistic team led by Director Marcel David (Assistant Director for Bawat Bonggang Bagay, Tiny Beautiful Things), Musical Director Maia Dapul (Anima Tierra, Trans Midya, Jungle Gym Play Laboratory), and Choreographer Katriel Garcia (3 Upuan, Dagitab, Paano Man ang Ibig).
Alongside them are Dramaturg Nathania Kuy (Subversive Lives, Kaliwaan, Ningning sa Silangan, Lipistik at Pulbura), Set Designer Tata Tuviera (Sintang Dalisay, The Revolutionists, Nektopolis, Sta Juana ng mga Katayan, Barboys, Tabing Ilog), Lighting Designer France Pagulayan (Full House Theater Company’s Shrek the Musical and Delia D., and Spike Theatre’s Jonah), and Sound Designer Andy Reysio-Cruz (Ang Negosyante ng Venesya, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, Makibaka, Huwag…, Mga Multo). Joining them are Sebastian Nicolas Lapus (The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, The Addams Family), making his debut as Brand Designer, and Intimacy Director Regina De Vera (Open Endings, Jonah).
Supporting the artistic team is Ateneo Blue Repertory’s own associate artistic team, composed of students from the company: Associate Directors Sara Sicam and Maria Prats; Associate Musical Directors Ryann Dueñas and Haniefa Cristal; Associate Choreographer Chloee Zabala; Associate Set Designer Hayden Tam; Associate Costume Designer Rianne Jessica Olpoc; Associate Lighting Designer Kim Astorga; Associate Sound Designer Nico Acero; and Brand Managers Riel Marquez and AJ Turiano.
Keeping the show running behind the scenes is the technical team, led by Technical Director Julia Macuja (Sintang Dalisay, Emilia) and Sound Engineer Aliyah Dy (‘Til Death Do Us Part, the PROM, Legally Blonde, The Half Life of Marie Curie), with Associate Technical Directors Bear Siena and Ellaine Edles, and Associate Sound Engineers Aviela Gamo and Anthony Luna.
