The Backrooms Breakout: An Escape Room Like No Other
Last May 24, I was invited to The Backrooms Breakout, an immersive escape room experience by Breakout Philippines in partnership with CreaZion Studios and A24. It wasn’t my first time solving mysteries in Breakout, but I was intrigued by how they would pull off a Backrooms-inspired escape room because I was a fan of the original Backrooms short films even before the feature was greenlit.
The participants were blindfolded on their way to the actual room and were given instructions. This already set the tone for the eerie atmosphere and the liminal spaces that awaited us once we took off our blindfolds. The pressure was on: every team member began scouring all the corners of the room looking for clues, keys, and codes. We were only allotted 20 minutes so we had to be quick with every decision we made.
It was so amazing how they recreated the Backrooms, and I was just imagining how it would have felt to have watched the film beforehand (or after, whichever one prefers) because I’m certain it would have elevated the whole experience; it’s not any day you get to experience a horror movie in real life.
Thankfully, the whole experience is very accessible as guests can just present a pre-purchased Backrooms movie ticket from Shangri-La Red Carpet Cinemas (one movie ticket = one player). So technically, it’s free once you watch the film at their cinemas! Guests may also do online reservations via the theater’s website.
Directed by Kane Parsons and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, Backrooms opens exclusively in Philippine cinemas starting June 3, 2026.
