After two celebrated, sold-out runs last September 2024 and February 2025, 3Upuan returns this August for another limited engagement– this time in Makati City.
Staged in an intimate setting with only three chairs and three actors– reprising their roles are Jojit Lorenzo as Jers, JC Santos as Jack, and Martha Comia as Jai– the play explores time, grief, and familial bonds through the perspectives of siblings awaiting their father’s passing.
Written and directed by Guelan Varela-Luarca and presented by Scene Change in partnership with Areté and Archivo 1984, 3Upuan premiered at Areté Ateneo to critical acclaim, earning praise from both critics and audiences. It was cited as Best Play (One Act) in the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Best of Theater 2024, described as “a heart-wrencher of a play that’s easily best-of-the-decade material” by Inquirer.NET’s Vincen Gregory Yu, and lauded by TheaterFansManila’s Emil Hofileña as “[setting] a very high bar for the year ahead in theatrical storytelling.”
This upcoming run will be held at Archivo 1984, where the gallery will also present Totally Tinio, an exhibition showcasing the poetry, writings, and interpretive artworks of National Artist for Theater and Literature Rolando Tinio—bridging performance and archival storytelling.
Seating is extremely limited, with only 45 seats available per show. Tickets are priced at PHP 2,500 and are now available for purchase at https://bit.ly/sc3upuan2025. To learn more about Scene Change and 3Upuan, follow them on Facebook at Sc. Scene Change and on Instagram at @sc.scenechange.
